You could say a drawing of the 2J back in 1970 changed my life in a rather serious way. Since then I must have spend thousands of hours reading and writing about Chaparrals and activities like collecting stuff, building/racing scale models, drawing and painting Chaparral related themes, etc. It keeps me from the streets! Part of the results is on www.thechaparralfiles.com. Many thanks to Jim Hall and his team for all the pleasant hours!

I have admired the engineering and beauty of Jim Halls Chaparrals for many years. I still feel they are unsurpassed in many ways for their unique engineering and beauty.

To whom it may concern and Mr. Jim Hall,

I'm not sure how to contact Mr.Hall, but I'm familiar with his 1967 Can-Am season with Chaparral 2G running the experimental/first aluminum 427 engine from GM. That season I believe that now deceased Bill Mitchell and Vince Piggins worked secretively with him on this initial aluminum 427 that was weber carburated. Mitchell and Piggins also built a special (one off) Camaro Pace car for the Can-AM series that year called the "Cherokee" that was a modified candy apple red 1967 Camaro Convertible with a special Can-Am type motor running a see through hood and a weber carburated big block, much like the one in his Chapperal. I have pictures of that Special Camaro Can-Am pace car leading the field at Elkhart Lake (Road America) first race with Jim following the pacer about three rows back in the white number 66 (Chaparral 2G). The pace car was driven at each race by Sir Sterling Moss the commissioner of the Can-Am series that year.

As Mitchell and Piggins are no longer with us I was hoping to be able to speak with or exhange emails with Mr. Hall about that special pace car that his friends at GM design/racing built in 67 for the Cam-Am series.

The car has recently been found in almost original condition by a gentlemen in Wisconsin named Terry Lietzau who has information and pictures of the Cherokee Can Am pacer at his website that I've attached. It shows pictures of the Cherokee at Elkhart Lake with Chaparral 2G behind. Here's the link.

http://67cherokeecamaro.com/index.html

If you would be so kind to provide this information and my contact information to Mr. Hall and see if he'd be willing to answer a few questions that would be great. I'm a friend of Terry, the present Cherokee owner and also a very active member at www.camaropacecars.com and we are doing research on the Cherokee and its participation in the 67 Can Am season.

Thanks.

It is great to see that something has been done to honor Chaparral's place in automotive history. Mr. Hall was the epitome of innovation and ingenuity in a period when motorsport was about innovation.

Spent many hours at Laguna Seca enjoying the Chaparral beatthe competition. Took many pictures over the years. One year found both cars in separate pieces spread over the garage floor at the Chrysler dealership in Monterey a few days before an up coming race...and no one around...could not believe my eyes, and no camera...

Dear Mr. Jim Hall, I just turned 54, Jan03, & recently came across your website. In my younger years, MY favorite slot car was the original #65 "louvered" chaparral. I "grew up" around the body shop business, as my dad worked at the Chevrolet dealership, from '58 to '70, in late'70 opened his own shop, I stayed in the shop in '80, & he went on to work at the now defunct GM plant here in OKC. He died in 1990. My first "seat time" in a vette, was in a new'63, "in the showroom" We went to the NY Worlds Fair in '65, where I got to see the Mako Shark II on display! In '67, "I fired up" a new 435HP vette, nuff said! I came to this website, studying the different "series" of ALUMINUM! What was & is so COOL about Mr. Jim Hall is, that his path crossed GM's. What is even COOLER is that HIS design & engineering was ahead of GM's! The Mako Shark II is STILL my favorite vette, & then the XP-880! circa '68. My study of ALUMINUM is because, before I die, I'm planning on building a "mid-engine" *#%$ at *$ corvette, & MAYBE Mr. HAll's & my paths will cross! Thanks, Mark

I live 10 miles or so from the site where Riverside Raceway was and growing up I went there almost everytime I knew the Chaparral was going to be there. I hung on the fence at turn 7 most of the time and the first time I laid eyes on the 2E I just couldn't believe it. It was amazing! The wing flipping up coming over the crest of the hill and Hall diving it in deeper than everybody else was great.
Seeing all the Chaparrals restored today brings back all the fond memories of the good old days at the track. Keep up the good work and continued good health and success to Jim Hall and all the Chaparral organization!

Hi there,

I recently saw an image of what i now know (after countless but worthwhile searching) to be a Chaparral 2D.
That Vehicle is certainly one of the most beautiful and aesthetically satisfying designs I have ever seen in the world. It is truly amazing, the dynamics, the vision, is truly ahead of its time. I wish to only see one in real life!

I loved watching Jim Hall and his chaparral cars when i was
a teenager in the sixties and have made the pilgramage to
the museum in midland and am collecting the diecast models
to display prominently in my home. He has been the greatest
innovative mind in aerodynamics for auto's ever!
