I am so glad to have found this sight. Growing upin Midland in the 1960's was great experience. I'll never forget the day i walked into a barber shop and there sat my object of my heroworship Jim Hall himself getting his haircut
My favorite cars were the 2c and of course the 2E.I followed the team until I joined the Navy and life got in the way. Now looking at this website will again be a joy
Tosee the cars running again is a thrill, to know Jim Hall has not given up racing to go into oil is good to know as well. I live right down the road from Chaparral Cars and see it regularly. There is a God to keep the best part of Midland's heritage going.

Your racers were absolutely the best the united states ever had on the track. I was absolutely in awe of them in the 60s and still am today. Please let me know if there are ant shirts available with your cars images on them ,Id love to be able to have some.

I grew up in Midland and followed closely these amazing cars during the Can-Am days. My older first-cousin Kim Kollar worked for Mr. Hall for many years until he shut down the CART team.
I've been to the Chaparral Gallery at the Petroleum Museum and it was amazing to be in the same room with these incredible cars from my teen years. It is well worth a visit! A story in AutoWeek told of the museum's opening and that Jim drove a 2F from the shop on the Rankin Highway to the museum on Interstate 20 a few miles away. That would have been wonderful to see!

Very disappointed that I never saw these machines race although I followed their success in the media of the day. Finally saw the original in Toronto both at the Auto Show and in an exotic car show room - almost fainted when they said 'best offer over 2 million...'
hope to get down to Texas some day and see the whole collection. all the best to Mr. Hall and family

Perhaps Jim Musser will recall me and that I was the GM Patent Attorney that served as Patent Counsel to Chevrolet during those "good old days". With my most enjoyable times spent with the Chevy R&D Staff and Corvette Staff. When I was fortunate to meet all the key players and become a friend with some and especially Zora, Gib Hufstader and Jerry Mrlik. But always at arms lengh with Frank Winchell and especially when he became VP of Engineering Staff and embarked on a self-cambering vehicle (motorcycle)program. And eventually rotary engine development with me then serving as Special Patent Counsel for the ill-fated Rotary Engine/Car Program.
The above-named were all inventors in some of the key aspects of development in their charge and as it turned out, I actually prepared most of their patent applications. And we did have some other common interests as I had a Bugatti Type 35B and an Indy Offy-Powered Indy Roadster at time. And Jerry Mrlik after his retirement and me eventually went on to design and produce radio-controlled, quater-scale race cars (Jeron Quarter Classics,Ltd).
I have been asked to contribute a story for GM History WIKI concerning GM inventions (patents)and because of my interest in race cars, I plan to identify the Chaparral wing patent (US 3455594. And further concerning the Chaparral, I am condsidering identifying the positive engagement clutch about which little,if any,is known publicly so far as I know. But unfortunately, GM whom I have served as an Outside Legal Counsel since my retirement has just informed me that it has destroyed its old patent records and perhaps you can help without me having to resort to having a costly patent search made in the US Patent Office Achives.
I recall that Joe Curletto (sp?) who was a technician in Chevy R&D was the inventor. And that in discussions with Jim Hall,he and Hap Sharp had the ability to shift gears without the use of a friction clutch or syncronizer. And that the competition knowing the car had a torque converter believed there was an automatic transmission. If Joe Curletto is still around and I could contact him, that would solve my dilemma in identifying this patent. And I suspect that you would like to know its identify too.
Sincerely,
Ronald L. Phillips

I have been a big fan of JIm Hall since he raced in SCCA ( a long time ago ) and followed his career in the pages of Sports Car Graphic - I plan to be at Mosport in June to see the Can-Am cars which in my opinion was the zenith of sport car racing in the 1960-1970 era - good luck and don't tell everyone everything that you have learned ( Ray E. )

I met Mr Hall one day in Midland with my father. At the time he was building a top secret car in the hangar across the tarmac from where my dad hangared his crop duster. The day dad introduced us to Mr Hall, he took us in and showed my brother and I the car he had been working on. It was the original Chaparral. . . It hadn't even been introduced yet.
My dad passed away this March 12 of this year - every time we saw one of your cars he would always rememind up of that day in Midland. . .

I grew up reading about Jim Hall and the Chaparral cars. In his day, Jim was the best at what he did and his cars were unbeatable. His achievements in aerodynamics were not appreciated as much as they should have been. I will visit the Museum this summer and I am sure I will never forget it.

I'm a member of mod development team for a "legendary" racing simulation. For the first time, we are going to model closed wheel cars instead of Formula One cars.
This mod will be for the 1967 racing season and, of course, will include the Chaparral 2D and 2F models.
We have a lot of information on these two Chaparrals, but need a few more bits.
1. Which engine did the 2D use for the two races it entered in 1967; Daytona and Sebring? Did it still use the 327 cu in engine or did it have the 427 engine like the 2F?
2. How much did each model weight without fuel?
Thanks for any information you can provide.
